That you see a new year as renewal. I see no difference, as in, this is a human construct.

Oh no...Did I imply "renewal?" I didn't mean to, not even a little. Sorry if I was not clear.

On the contrary, the Ianus metaphor, the watched doorway, is a decision. Will one step through a door uninformed by tradition and wisdom, or, will one be able to use elder eyes, looking back, eyes of prudence and experience? A choice.

Now that's interesting. Obviously, the movement of the planets isn't a human construct, so am I to understand that you are referring to the celebration thereof? In other words, do you want to say that there is no reason to suppose that the passage of the earth round the sun might have any effect on human society? You may be right. Without wanting to commit myself to a full-blown defence of astrology, though, I do wonder whether the (as far as I am aware, universally held) ancient association of the movement of the spheres with changes in human life might not have more to it than we moderns think. After all, even the Magi were guided by a star. Just a thought: I really don't have anything more precise to contribute!

Here’s what I know. It’s cold outside.

At this same time a year ago and a year hence, it is highly likely that it will be cold outside.

And no, I don’t consider astrology to be a thing.

Marking the passage of time is a human construct, the calendar, the months, the years, without humans they do not exist. Time would continue to pass, call it what you wish.

Ah - now this is where I disagree. I would say that the marking of the passage of time is not a human construct, but a human recognition of something which is real, whether we perceive and mark it or not. Obviously, the names we give them are human constructs, but those names do indicate something which actually exists, rather than just being an arbitrary imposition on our part. Likewise with numbers. Or not?

Please keep warm! It is cold here in Japan, too.

The position of the moon is not a human construct. The seasons caused by the rotation of the Earth whether orbital or on its axis, are not. Recognition of same is a human endeavor, if not a construct. Numbers actually do not exist without intelligence, but are entirely human constructs.

Recognition and construct are really the same thing, are they not? The passage of time. Fluid yet continuous, uninterrupted, stable, reliable. Unmolested by human activity.

This makes me want a Ianus in the front door of my home. How many doors are we walking through without using that moment as an opportunity to reflect on the life we have lived and the life we have yet to live? And if we did use it, how much deeper would our love be? Our gratitude?
